Phoenix, Arizona-based photographer Ernie Button accidentally discovered that dried out Scotch leaves a white, chalky, intricate pattern on the bottom of the glass and turned it into a beautiful photo project.
By experimenting with different kinds of Scotch residue and shining colored lights on the glasses, he produced a beautiful series of whisky art—named ‘Vanishing Spirits: The Dried Remains of Single Malt Scotch’—that is “a little celestial, or extraterrestrial, almost”.
These stunning macro shots of left-over whisky turn out to resemble the other-worldly surfaces of distant planets and lovely seascapes of rolling waves.
Button has since captured more than 75 shots of dreamy whisky residue, which is enough for an exhibition at the Islay Festival of Music and Malt.
