US-based food-ordering marketplace Grubhub has completed the acquisition of campus food ordering platform Tapingo for a total of $150m. The company funded the transaction through cash on hand and its existing credit facility.
Based in California, Tapingo offers food delivery services to more than 500,000 diners at on-campus cafes, restaurants, and cashier-less stores. The company’s technology platform will directly integrate with college meal plans and point-of-sale systems to provide order-taking and accurate delivery.
Tapingo also streamlines operations and increases in-store efficiency for campus restaurant partners such as Taco Bell, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Panda Express and Jamba Juice and has partnerships with major foodservice and catering firms such as Aramark and Sodexo.
Under the terms of agreement, Tapingo’s network will be integrated with Grubhub’s restaurant marketplace and delivery platform to help students and campus restaurants. The deal was signed during the end of September.
Tapingo’s platform will benefit from Grubhub’s restaurant marketplace and delivery operations and will expand its campus dining programmes to more diners, both on and off campus.
On 30 October, Grubhub also completed the acquisition of 11 franchisee-owned OrderUp food delivery markets for an undisclosed amount. The new markets complement 27 previous OrderUp markets acquired in 2017.
Grubhub currently has a network of more than 95,000 restaurant partners in 1,700 US cities and London. The company’s portfolio of brands includes Seamless, LevelUp, Eat24, AllMenus and MenuPages.
