FAB News are looking at back at some of the outstanding projects that were awarded at the recently concluded FAB Awards. We highlight Dalston’s Soda Packaging ( Outer Boxes ) and B&B Studio’s success at The Awards Show as GOLD FAB Award Winners for Packaging Design at The 22nd FAB Awards.
Dalston’s Soda
Born in 2013 and founded by chef Duncan O’Brien, Dalston’s Soda is on a mission to make uniquely tasty carbonated soft drinks by hand, using real and locally sourced ingredients, no added sugar and absolutely no junk. A pioneer of the craft soda category, Dalston’s range comprises 6 canned sodas, 3 light seltzers and 2 alcohol-free botanical G&Ts.
Partnering with the brand since its early days, B&B studio has built authenticity and ethics into its positioning, visual identity and packaging design through an essence of ‘soda with soul’, helping to attract switched-on consumers who demand brands with personality, provenance and a clear point of difference. The overall visual identity is centred around the iconic Dalston’s ‘D’ combined with distinctive graphic illustrations, a bold fruity colour palette and a personality-driven tone of voice.
The Dalston’s Outerboxes
Dalston’s briefed B&B studio to design flavour-generic outerboxes for sampling and shipping that would reinforce the ‘Soda with Soul’ positioning, help create further brand love from existing online buyers, and introduce new trade customers to the brand’s values and personality.
The boom-box-inspired designs celebrate the brand’s community-focused ethos and reflect its music and cultural origins. The brand began started its life at Passing Clouds, a culturally-rich music venue in Hackney, East London, and the design pays homage to this historic venue through a real sense of nostalgia.
By combining purposeful utility as a shipper with desirable and sharable design, the boxes help create and foster a community of brand advocates that help Dalston’s market the brand. Made entirely from card, the boxes also align with the brand’s sustainable values and commitment to A Plastic Planet – a charity that’s working towards a plastic-free supermarket aisle.
In summary, the boom box shippers confirm Dalston’s status as the credible, cool player in the craft soda category as it continues its journey from niche start-up to international scale-up.
Shaun Bowen, Co-Founder and Creative Partner at B&B studio comments:
Over the last few months it has been really inspiring to see how our clients have managed to quickly adapt their businesses so that they can continue to meet consumers’ needs. The Dalston’s outerboxes are a perfect example of this, facilitating our social isolation whilst also bringing people together through some moments of fun. People have shared them on social media being used as at-home DJ booths, and they have also helped to reinforce Dalston’s collaboration with Deviate Music – a weekly live-streamed lockdown session hosted by the brand. The Dalston’s Outerboxes are a great example of how brands can use every-touchpoint to reinforce their positioning.
