The Newmarket Gin scoops gold at the Harpers Design Awards

The Newmarket Gin has been awarded gold in the Harpers Design Awards 2016 for its quintessentially British, racing-inspired design. The Newmarket Gin, created in celebration of Newmarket’s 350 years of racing, encompasses the very best that Newmarket has to offer; the use of frosted glass and binocular viewpoint in the bottle design captures and conveys the atmosphere of Newmarket races, and the gin itself is made from local ingredients including orchid petals, from Devil’s Dyke.

Bernard Gormley, co-founder of Nude Brand creation, the agency behind The Newmarket Gin packaging design, said: “The packaging is inspired by the famous racing town of Newmarket, as well as English photographer Eadweard Muybridge’s pioneering work in the study of the running horse. The frosted glass gives a tactile feel and provides a binocular window to spy the running horses on the back of the glass, as light refracts through the liquid, a sense of movement is given to the thoroughbreds. We are really proud that the gin has received the Harpers Gold Award.”

For over 135 years, Harpers Wine & Spirit has been the must-read publication for the UK wine and spirits trade and the annual Harpers Design Awards, organised by the publication, aims to recognise recently launched, redesigned or well established designs within the industry.

Andrew Catchpole, Editor, commented on the awards: “The standard was high, with some stunning examples of enticing and engaging design, really lifting those products above the ordinary. Judges went beyond purely aesthetical considerations, looking at how well the design of each product had been tailored to the clients’ brief and its target market.”

The Newmarket Gin is available from Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa and from Corney and Barrow, both in Newmarket, in two small-batch lines. There are 350 Anniversary Newmarket Gin bottles available, each with a RRP of £85; and a further 250 limited edition ‘Squires Reserve’ Original Newmarket Gin bottles with a RRP of £70 each. Gift boxes including the 350 Anniversary Newmarket Gin and two Darlington crystal tumblers are available for £150 each.
