McDonald’s is turning the NFL on its head in its latest ad campaign by showing legends of the game including Jerry Rice and Mike Ditka rooting for rival teams.
As official sponsor of the football league, McDonald’s has released a series of ads featuring NFL Hall of Fame stars however in a cruel twist they are supporting teams other than the ones they are synonymous with.
The spots are part of McDonald’s new giveaway game called ‘Game Time Gold’ in which customers can win weekly giveaways of $500,000 and trips to Super Bowl 50.
In one of the spots longtime San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice is wins merchandise from the game and is then seen watering a Dallas Cowboys star on his front lawn while wearing the team’s shirt as horrified 49ers fans walk by.
In another, former Chicago Bears player and coach, Mike Ditka, selects a sleeveless Green Bay Packers sweater from his closet.
Douglas Freeland, director of sports and entertainment alliances at McDonald’s said “the idea for the promotion came from McDonald’s, but we certainly have collaborated with the NFL throughout the development of the promotion.”
The game isn’t due to launch until 3 November however much like its all day breakfast launch, McDonald’s is using social media to generate a buzz. A video posted on Rice’s Twitter last week appeared to be shot in secret and showed Ditka wearing a Packers shirt without referring to McDonald’s.

The promotion has partnered with NBC to announce the winners. Each week on NBC’s Sunday night Football a winning team will be announced and those who entered with that team will be stand a chance of winning a prize. Prizes include four weekly giveaways of $500,000 and four-night trips for two people to Super Bowl 50 as well as a number of smaller prizes such as Xbox One games consoles.
