Covent Garden Restaurant Launches Unusual Food Trend, The Avocado Bun

AvocadoBuns

The Avocado Bun is the newest unusual food craze to hit London this summer. Is there anything avocados can’t do? From avocado ice cream to avocado face masks, cupcakes and pasta sauce this humble fruit ceases to amaze.

After taking Instagram by storm, Joe’s Southern Table and Bar in Covent Garden, London has responded to requests from customers to add an Avocado Bun to the menu. The Low-Carb and Gluten-Free burger alternative is now a favourite with customers of the London based deep south inspired restaurant.

The craze was started by Colette Dike, a food stylist based in the Netherlands, who posted a picture of an avocado halved, in which was sandwiched, a chickpea burger and grilled baby sweetcorn. The creation sees the bun of a burger swapped for avocado halves, resulting in what can only be described as a beautifully stuffed green orb. Jim Robertson who opened the restaurant in 2013 saw Colette’s creations whilst searching for new menu ideas on Instagram and felt they were a perfect fit for Joe’s.

Joe’s Southern Table and Bar is offering the Avocado Bun in three varieties; a traditional cheeseburger with bacon, southern fried chicken with hot mayo sauce and a vegetarian soy burger. Priced at £8.95 each.

Jim Robertson, Group Operations Manager of Joe’s Southern Table and Bar

It’s not the easiest of things to eat. It can quickly turn into a mushy mess so we’re finding customers are using a knife and fork to eat it. The response has been overwhelming since we launched. It’s not only low-carb and gluten-free but also looks and tastes amazing. Preparing them is a nightmare for the kitchen as avocados can be difficult to work with but I have to admit, they taste brilliant.

Anthony Knight, Joe’s Southern Table and Bar Marketing Manager:

Joe’s Southern Table and Bar was one of the first restaurants to put gluten free fried chicken on the menu so it made sense for us to add the Joe’s Avocado Bun too. We’re always on the lookout for new food trends and this is definitely Instagram worthy! It’s a huge hit with tourists, healthy eaters and foodies alike.
