Executive Chef Nikesh Sawant and his creative team draw on flavours from India, Tibet, Nepal, and the diverse diaspora that has shaped Indo-Chinese cuisine to launch Soho’s most exciting new arrival: TANGRA – a bold, day-to-late-night Indo-Chinese restaurant.
A Tribute to Indo-Chinese Cuisine
Named after the Tangra neighbourhood of Kolkata – the historic heart of Indo-Chinese cooking – the menu draws on the legacy of the city’s Hakka Chinese community, which blended traditional Hakka methods with Indian spices and local ingredients to create a cuisine uniquely their own. The culinary style has since travelled and transformed, finding new expressions from Mumbai’s street stalls, Kathmandu’s bustling carts, and far beyond.
TANGRA’s menu is a bold journey through Indo-Chinese flavours using the finest ingredients, where the chefs layer tradition with creativity and innovation. Dishes such as Himawan Sadeko Chick’n and TANGRA Special Combination Rice burst with attitude and spice. Other highlights include Manchurian Kofta and Hakka noodles – the ultimate Indo-Chinese comfort food, Chilli Cheese Quesadilla, Chinese Bhel, Black Pepper Cashew Duk, Gobi 65, Schezwan Rice, and Bazaar MOMO stuffed with sweetcorn and cheddar cheese. In India’s spirit of reinvention, TANGRA also boasts its own playful invention: the Hakko – a Hakka-style taco made with paratha.
The menu is built for sharing – a line-up of bold, flavour-packed dishes that capture the energy and spice of Indo-Chinese cooking. The chefs’ own backgrounds come through in every dish, reflecting a collective kitchen approach where each plate tells its own story.
Executive Chef Nikesh Sawant said, “For me, Indo-Chinese food is pure nostalgia. It’s the taste of Bombay nights after school or post-shift at midnight, plates of Manchurian and noodles shared with friends until sunrise. TANGRA is that same spirit. It’s fiery, joyful, and unapologetic.”
“We make every sauce from scratch, from our bold Schezwan rice to our Bombay Szechuan chutney, using fresh spices sourced directly from India. You’ll taste the smoke, the garlic, the seven kinds of chilli – it’s food with heat, depth and character.”
Cocktails with Character
Drinks at TANGRA are as bold and vibrant as the dishes, from the Lychee Baijiu Sling (Baijiu, lychee, pandan and grapefruit sherbet) and Rasgulla Espresso Martini (spiced rum, Tia Maria, allspice syrup, and espresso) to the tropical Piña Kolkata, featuring spiced rum, amla ginger and coconut. The No and Lo Menu is just as vibrant, featuring tangy jal jeera, cooling cucumber, and earthy jaggery, as well as the No’Rita 0% – a non-alcoholic take on a margarita, with lime and India’s sweet, tangy kala khatta.
Soho Spirit, Mumbai Soul
Just steps away from Ronnie Scott’s and Bar Italia, TANGRA channels the spirit of Soho itself – buzzing, electric, and unapologetically alive. The restaurant’s interiors burst with the feeling of Mumbai, blending Indian mythology and pop culture through its distinctive retrofuturist lens. The space is rich in texture, featuring perforated timber panels, layered visual rhythms created through patterned floors, glowing signage, and graphic overlays, alongside retro laminates, textured bricks, and brass details. All these elements combine to create a setting that feels both nostalgic and boldly modern.
TANGRA is open from Monday 3rd November 2025 at 17 Frith Street, Soho, London W1D 4R, seven days a week for lunch and dinner, with late-night service until 1:30 am from Thursday to Saturday.
