A detailed study into the costs and calorie counts of pizzas at the UK’s main pizza chains and supermarkets has revealed that takeaway pizzerias are charging up to nine times the price for an equivalent product purchased from a supermarket or made from scratch. The investigation also highlighted the high calorie load of pizzas from popular high street takeaway chains.
A large 13.5 inch take away margherita pizza from Papa John’s costs £12.49 and contains an enormous serving of 2260 calories and 75 grams of fat. This contrasts hugely with making the same size pizza at home, which would cost around £1.50 – just 37 pence for the base and just over £1.10 for the topping – and would contain around 1500 calories and much less fat at 36 grams.
The study carried out by money saving website Voucherbox.co.uk analysed prices for take away pizza from Pizza Hut, Papa John’s and Domino’s. Meanwhile, frozen pizzas, fresh pizzas and bake your own options were price studied at Sainsbury’s, Tesco and ASDA. The cost and calories per 100g of pizza from each source were examined and compared.
Homemade pizzas can reduce calories by almost half per 100g and cut fat by more than half per 100g. A large Domino’s margherita contains 274 calories per 100g, while the least calorific, a pre-bought base with your own marghertia topping, contains around 150 calories per 100g. Domino’s also contains 8.8g of fat per 100g verses 3.8g of fat when making your own.
The study highlighted that baking your own at home could save consumers £12.50 per pizza for a margherita with almost identical ingredients. Meanwhile, takeaway pizzas are up to seven times more expensive than fresh supermarket equivalents.
Significant differences can also be found between making your own pizza from scratch and buying a fresh supermarket pizza, the cost per 100g being 22p verses 64p almost triple the price for the pre-made option.
Shane Forster, Country Manager from Voucherbox.co.uk commented, “Everyone loves a tasty pizza, and you can save yourself a great deal of money by making a more effort at home to make your own pizza, especially if you are cooking for the whole family. Being aware of the calorie and fat content of such takeaway items is also very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet.”
All prices studied are for margherita options from each restaurant and retailer, whilst the homemade pizza recipe costs are based on 14inch margaritas and the available pre-made base sizes.
