New identity & packaging for Namkhong, the Lao beer inspired by “sabai sabai” moments

Heineken Laos has launched a comprehensive brand and packaging refresh of Namkhong, the mainstream beer brand in Laos. Designed by Lonsdale Asia, the work aims to reposition the beer towards a younger, urban audience with a confident new look anchored in the Lao spirit of “sabai sabai”: comfortable, relaxed, and joyfully at ease. Historically more popular in rural areas, Namkhong aims to grow in a market dominated by homegrown and international competitors.

Namkhong takes its name from the Mekong, one of Laos’, and southeast Asia’s, great rivers. The new design celebrates life’s journey and “going with the flow”, by applying assets that travel seamlessly across can, bottle, and carton.

The refined wordmark introduces subtle wave details referencing the river, creating a sense of movement within sharpened, contemporary typography. The reimagined boat icon has evolved from a laborious race symbol into a joyful, collective rowing experience – friends moving forward together down the river of life – with motion lines and wave accents that emphasize momentum. The rowers themselves have been redrawn to help create the relaxed, friendly, and distinctly Asian feeling.

A bold, confident river-inspired blue now dominates the can, delivering immediate shelf impact amid the beer category’s prevailing greens and yellows. The carton has been transformed into a solid blue block that acts as a brand beacon, amplifying recognition and showcasing the refreshed assets across retail touchpoints.

Katrina Crescenzo, Associate Creative Director at Lonsdale Asia, says: “Redesigning Namkhong was all about telling the story of Laos’ most important river in a bold, confident, and modern way. Working with Heineken Lao Brewery, we also got to tell a David and Goliath story; helping an underdog brand stand tall against powerful brands. The end goal is a unified identity and pack system that is instantly legible at shelf, culturally resonant, and effortless to share in social settings, positioning Namkhong as the natural choice for those sabai sabai moments.”
